Summary

Social Network Analysis, Third Edition provides a comprehensive overview of the field, outlining both its theoretical basis and its key techniques。 Building upon the core ideas of points, lines and paths, John Scott builds a framework of network analysis that covers such measures as density, centrality, clustering, centralization, and spatialization。 He identifies the various types of clique, component, and circle into which networks are formed, and he outlines an approach to socially structured positions within networks。 A completely new chapter in this edition discusses recent work on network dynamics and methods for studying change over time。 A final chapter discusses approaches to network visualisation。

I actually read the 4th edition of this book which came out more recently in 2017。 I'm learning a lot in this area and so this was a nice starter book to the field of social network analysis and some of the fundamental concepts。 I did find it lacking real examples of applications。 It does have more of the social science perspective which is to be expected but the field of network analysis is exploding in so many areas so readers coming from another perspective (eg physical sciences, business, an I actually read the 4th edition of this book which came out more recently in 2017。 I'm learning a lot in this area and so this was a nice starter book to the field of social network analysis and some of the fundamental concepts。 I did find it lacking real examples of applications。 It does have more of the social science perspective which is to be expected but the field of network analysis is exploding in so many areas so readers coming from another perspective (eg physical sciences, business, analytics) may be a little disappointed。 I thought the last chapter on visualization was so sparse compared to the vast advances that have happened in network visualization as a result of computing power and technology。 。。。more

Good discussion of how relational data differs from individual data。

This is the nearly perfect introduction to understanding Social Network Analysis for the total novice。 Almost no math。 Easy to read and relatively short。 Focuses on the basic concepts。 Of course, after you read it you'll go on to other works, but this is the place to start if you aren't already familiar with SNA。 This is the nearly perfect introduction to understanding Social Network Analysis for the total novice。 Almost no math。 Easy to read and relatively short。 Focuses on the basic concepts。 Of course, after you read it you'll go on to other works, but this is the place to start if you aren't already familiar with SNA。 。。。more

Great handbook on social network analysis ~ practical and helpful applications of SNT。 Not recommended for the average layperson as it requires some understanding of the theory behind SNA to apply the formulas/calculations presented in this handbook。
